Lowe’s to Add Room-Scanning Tool to App

Lowe’s is set to launch a new feature in its app called Measure Your Space, a room scanning, measurement and estimate tool that the home improvement brand says is part of its vision for “spacial commerce.”

Set to launch in beta before the end of the first quarter of 2022, Measure Your Space will be available through the Lowe’s iOS app for iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max and iPad Pro users.

The company said the tool would start with flooring, one of the most popular home improvement projects, with just under five million people a year taking on flooring, carpeting or paneling jobs. Eventually, Lowe’s wants to expand the service to offer things like the ability to visualize flooring changes in real time, and also to eventually work with other smartphones and devices.

“Home improvement can be complex, but at Lowe’s, we’re investing in emerging technologies like LiDAR, AI and mixed reality to make home improvement simple and intuitive,” said Seemantini Godbole, Lowe’s executive vice president and chief information officer, in a news release. “We see a future in which the devices customers already own can sense, understand and compile information about their home, putting it in their hands the moment they need it. We call this future spatial commerce, and we’re excited to bring it to our customers.”

Devices with the LiDAR Scanner employ purpose-built sensors and software to gauge the depth and dimensions of a space and the objects within it. Measure You Space leverages this technology to help customers get detailed room measurements.

Users can access the feature by hitting the Measure Your Space BETA button on the product detail page of select flooring products in the Lowe’s iOS app. From there, customers can scan a room and get an automatically generated floor plan, room measurements and personalized estimates.

The announcement comes less than a month after Lowe’s unveiled a retail media service that includes various omnichannel advertising services to boost home lifestyle brands.

Lowe’s One Roof Media Network will include data-driven insights into customer behavior and home-based trends, with a customized advertising program “to help brand partners drive relevancy and sales with the home lifestyle customer,” the company said.
